As an lifelong fan sporting a Chargers tattoo and a penchant for doing the ‘Lights Out’ dance to celebrate anything from a strike in bowling to a good test grade, I cannot stand to watch our team to continue to play so far beneath our potential. The time has come for us to stand up for our team. The time has come for us to band together and run Norv Turner out of town. His previous track record as a head coach has shown his commitment to mediocrity throughout his career, and that trend has only continued despite the fact that he is currently in charge of one of the most talented teams in the history of the National Football League.<BR/> Allow me to elaborate on some of the problems I have with Turner as a head coach. For one, whenever some aspect of our offense finally starts to get rolling, he inexplicably chooses to move away from that, which quickly causes our offense to sputter to a halt again. My numbers may be slightly off, but in this most recent loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, LaDainian Tomlinson, the reigning NFL MVP, carried the ball 14 times for 112 yards in the first half as the Chargers stormed out to a 16-6 halftime lead. However, in the second half LT only got 6 carries for 20 yards, and Turner put the game in the hands of Phillip Rivers, who has been less than effective this year, and was having one of the worst games of his career. Also, with a 1st and Goal at the Kansas City 5, LT did not carry the ball once, and 4 incompletions and several moments of indecisiveness later it was again the Chiefs’ ball with the game now out of reach.<BR/> All offseason, we have heard about how Norv Turner is a great mentor for young quarterbacks, and how he has helped Alex Smith improve by leaps and bounds the last few years since being very underwhelming as a Rookie #1 overall draft pick. We all heard how Phillip Rivers was poised to take the next step to becoming an elite quarterback this year, how he was going to soon be mentioned in the same breath as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Carson Palmer. However, if Rivers has taken even a step forward in his play under Turner, at the same time he has taken three humongous steps back. Four games into the 2006 season, Rivers had thrown seven touchdown passes compared to only two interceptions. Now, under Norv Turner’s tutelage, Rivers has thrown only 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, and has often looked absolutely overwhelmed and very hesitant in making the right reads and progressions.<BR/> We are very lucky to be blessed with a team so completely stacked with talent and depth at nearly every position; there is no way that a team that returned fully intact from a 14-2 season the previous year should start off the new season with a 1-3 record and barely a flash of last year’s brilliance. I understand that there are several factors at play, including the loss both of our coordinators to head coaching positions at other teams and of Eric Parker for the first half of the season with a toe injury. However, Norv Turner was brought in to provide continuity for this team, but the only aspect of continuity with the Chargers this year has been a trend of multiple momentum-killing turnovers from game to game. The team has been far less aggressive on both sides of the ball, and it has shown with sloppy play, indecisiveness, and bad decisions in every game. Out of 11 AFC Pro Bowlers from the 2006-2007 season, I can count 5 of them who have vastly underachieved this season. These kinds of problems have to be attributed to the head coach more than anyone else, especially in a situation where 19 starters returned to the starting lineup on Opening Day this year.<BR/> While I know that it is currently taboo to badmouth General Manager A.J. Smith thanks to his outstanding draft moves in the last few years, I feel that at least part of this debacle has to be attributed to him. However, I am not going to blame this one on his rift with Marty Schottenheimer. Instead, I feel that the real problem is that our team’s problems with indecision can be traced all the way back to the front office. Everyone and their mothers knew that Smith was going to fire Marty after that playoff disaster, but rather than get rid of him when there were still viable head coaching candidates available (including two on his own staff), Smith chose to waffle about until there was no one left, finally settling on a man who has absolutely no proven success at the head coaching level. Granted, he has been a great Offensive Coordinator in the past, but he does not have what it takes to be a successful head coach in this league.<BR/> I understand that most people do not believe that there is anyone out there right now who can step in midway through the season if we were to fire Norv Turner before the end of the year. However, I would like to remind everyone that we actually do have an outstanding coach on our staff who was in the running for several Head Coaching positions before settling for a post as a Chargers’ position coach after being unfairly passed over each time. That man was previously the Defensive Coordinator for the reigning NFC Champion Chicago Bears, a team that rode its defense all the way to the Super Bowl despite having one of the most erratic and unreliable starting quarterbacks that this League has seen in years. That man is Ron Rivera, currently a Linebackers Coach for the Chargers, who is more than ready to take the next step in his career and right this ship before this season becomes a competition to get a high draft pick rather than a high seed in the playoffs.<BR/> The time has come: the time has come for us to stand up for our Chargers, to band together and call for a shakeup within our coaching staff. If this season is to be salvaged, we need a change in regime. We need a change in attitude. We need to start back at square one, without the sense of entitlement with which we came into this season after being so dominant in the regular season last year. This does not just apply to players and coaches within the organization. Win or loss, we need to stand by our team’s side, and not jump off of the bandwagon just because of a disappointing season. I, for one, will continue to pour my heart and soul into my team even if Norv Turner remains as head coach and we continue to lose, and I hope that each of you out there will feel the same way. However, I feel strongly enough that a change at the top could do wonders for this time, which is why I am writing this letter today.
