So. I would have to assume if AJ is an honest person he is going to fire Norv Turner tomorrow.
For the record. I dont think its Norv's fault the Chargers lost. Sure, the play calling was WAY OFF what had got them the 11 game winning streak but the Chargers just didnt play that hard.
I fell bad for Norv. If you follow AJ's history Norv SHOULD be fired for only going 13-3 and losing the first playoff game they got to. Numbers are simple and the last great head coach got fired for going 14-2 and losing the playoff game.
SO.. Here we are. AJ. what are you going to do? Do you hire and fire coaches for personal reasons or for performance reasons. I guess we will find out this week.
As far as I can tell a team on the way to the superbowl was disrupted and a new coach was hired. 3 Years into it that guy stumbled in the same place.

We all know that Marty got fired because he clashed with the management style of AJ. That's why they hired Norv. It's common knowledge.
The 14-2, with 1 playoff loss was just a convenient way of firing the man.
Norv will be back in SD next year. It's not the head coach, or the coordinators that are to blame. It's the GM. He's weak. He's a terrible leader. He's a stubborn ass that refuses to listen to suggestions (only speculation, but from what I've read...). Either way, he's the common denominator.

The Chargers have got to ax this guy, he has taken them to a different level, but has not taken them to where they should be at. The window may be closing or may in fact be closed after this loss. Hopefully they have at least one or two more years left in them. I think LT is gone, AJ tried last year but failed, this time around I just cannot see them keeping him with his production being off.
Who would get them there? Gruden? He is really the only option that I see out there that would take the job. Cower wants to be close to his family. Who is there? I think they need someone that has at least won a ring to take them to the final level. This is way too painful to experience every year....

RC... AJ is not the issue. He assembled this team, he drafted these guys, you cannot deny the talent level that he has amassed. Norv is just not a head coach that can get these guys to the next level.
He has proven it. I think if someone with some real coaching ability came in, this team could have been flirting with an undefeated season. They made dumb mistakes.
RC, with the talent the Chargers have, you could have won 11 games coaching them. Norv is nightmare of epic proportions and should be shown the door. He should have been more aggressive today but played this really conservative play style, it was disheartening watching that game.
I keep hearing "conservative ball" (a.k.a. Marty-ball), and, sure, you could blame the head coach. But why did AJ go with this guy? Why did he go with Marty? I do agree, however, that he did build this team up with enormous talent. I will give him credit for that. But he just did what his head coaches did: they both built a strong foundation, with talent and regular season wins, but they just couldn't finish off the deal with the important aspects - a competent head coach and playoff wins. You get rid of AJ, a new GM will come in with the intelligence to hire a head coach who can make the risky decisions at the right moment in order to pull off wins, regardless of personality conflicts.

Well I can say this.. AJ got the talent... which is part of his job. His failings have been the head coach hires. I would much rather have someone with the ability to bring in quality talent than a person that can't take that talent to the next level.
I do not fault Norv for the NE loss a few years back.. that was all because that one dude did not drop down after his INT and fumbled the ball. But Norv just does not have it in him. The talent is staying around, bring in a guy with some pedigree, or bring in a guy that has some personality.. Norv has neither... I would love to see them make him the OC and bring in someone that is going to bring the fire, bring the temperment... the window may be closed though... will see if they can bring some of these peeps back... sadly, I think we saw our last game with LT in powder blue...
Yes, management plays a part in this, but the fact is that Norv has only had a winning record with some of the best talent in the NFL that he inherited from Marty. But that is old news.
Norv should go since he does not inspire and his play calling at crucial times is terrible. He doesn't have much respect in the NFL by other coaches and I didn't feel that he had it from most of the players until way into the season. In any case, Norv doesn't seem to have the spark that the Chargers need. I believe that Gruden does.

I wonder if the Spanos family will go for an entire house cleaning. The NFL is now bringing in old coaches to run an operation (like Mike Holmgren, Bill Parcells) and maybe the Chargers look to do that. So it might not just be Norv.
What is more painful is that it was Rex Ryan, the guy I wanted the Chargers to hire back after Marty was let go.

It was heart wrenching to watch L.T.'s post game interview. He sounded as if he was on the verge of tears. L.T., you've done a lot for the chargers and for San Diego. We love you. First off I'd like to say I don't like Norv. I never believed he was a good coach, I just thought he inherited a great team. Critics always say when we're winning he's a genius, when we lose, the other team was just that good. No one blames him for anything, not even AJ.
Well, it breaks my heart to say this but, I don't think this was Norv's fault either. Just a reminder we lost to the Jets 17-14. We lost by 1 freakin field goal. How many did Nate miss? THREE. I love you Nate Keading, but you choked at the wrong time. Hold your head down in shame until you make up for it.
I too think that Nate K. totally choked at the wrong time, but the Chargers could have and should have won this game.
Remember, the Jets did not even have ONE first down until much of the first half was played,

Turner obliged, resulting in a local icon – LaDainian Tomlinson – getting booed in the Chargers’ 17-14 divisional playoff loss to the Jets.
The Chargers’ coach kept force-feeding the ball to Tomlinson, who finished with only 24 yards on 12 carries. Tomlinson, 30, looking slower than ever, was booed on his final carry and hinted after the game he may retire.
“With (the Jets), if you turn it into just a pass every down, it gets tough,” said Turner, explaining his strategy.
Was Norv really wrong for trying to establish a running game? A lot of times, teams that fail to establish a running game in the first half continue to run in the second half and eventually break through. Passing on every down wouldn't have worked either.

The Jets have a hell of a defense so I knew this would be a tough game. The problem is, I don't think the Chargers thought so. I think that they thought they were going to blow them out. So when it was tough and close, they were aimless. Whose fault is that? I blame the coach. We've seen this exact same problem with Norv for seven years in Washington. He cannot prepare a team mentally. It's seems like all he is concerned with is the X's and O's. And he's pretty good at that. I'd hire him as OC without hesitation. But as head coach? NO WAY.

The Chargers passed over twice as often as they ran the ball yesterday, so how can people say that Norv had them running the ball too much?
Long time, Fouts era fan here. Marty was the high point following Stan Humphries and Natrone means taking us to a Super Bowl. They fired a far better coach than they hired in Norv. I was sick to my stomach when he was hired, he doesnt know how to win the big games without Jimmy Johnson's leadership. Yet again, another long offseason to suffer through. Gruden would be a God-send. After the first "unsportsman like" penalty, he would have grabbed the guys face mask and shouted in his face. And that probally would have been the last of em. He probally also would have known to kick the ball deep when the play coverage was playing onside kick. Worst case thing that does happen here is Norv is retained/extended, and we suffer through this 2 more seasons untill they cant even make the playoffs. Dang this sucks.
Just want to remind everyone that the Chargers didnt really beat any SOLID teams this year except maybe the Titans. And the okay teams like the Bengals were only beaten by very small margins.

Nearly all NFL games have mistakes and it is how you deal with them during the game that determines the better team.
I thought that the Chargers were the better team and their obvious lack of preparation for this game was completely highlighted during the battle to move on in the AFC.

I'm a 30 year fan too and I am not optimistic on or chances next year. I mean how many times can you have a crappy start to the season and then win the remaining games. It must get harder from here on in especially since the players have probably gotten to used to the idea that they will always find a way to come back. This has been the downfall of the Chargers. Norv DID screw up on the onside kick, because if the Chargers D had held in the NY 30 instead of their own 30, the Jets punt on 4th and 1 instead of going for it, and we get the ball with 90 seconds left, and a chance.
Norv DID keep an overly conservative game plan, when they had not done that all year. The Vikings never even let up, throwing 2 more TDs after the game was locked up.

As a Bears fan, I think Norv is one of the best offensive coordinators of all time. I don't think the Bears have ever beated a team Norv coached on. We had Ron as coordinator for several years, and he always lost the head to head matchups with his brother. This preseason game is just another time Norv has beaten us. I wish we had him.
